The CORE Project 10-Week Intensive Theatre Workshop & Performance:
14 Sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6pm – 10pm
July, August - through Thursday, September 12, 2019. 
At the Church of the Holy Apostle, 296 Ninth Avenue, NYC.
Between 26th and 27th Street
 
 
At the beginning of each workshop the participants will be given a meal from 6pm - 6:45pm.  During this time there will be discussions on what the class will be doing that day.  Sometimes they will discuss the play they have been assigned to read from our anthologies of the BEST PLAYS FROM THE STRAWBERRY ONE-ACT FESTIVAL.
 
Each student will be given an anthology of the Best Plays From The Strawberry One-Act Festival and a Journal to write about their experience at the end of the day.
 
The CORE Project 10-Week Intensive Theatre Workshop will consist of the following:
 
  • Balanced Wellness and Yoga Class, lead by Deborah Dunn, C.E.O. of Balanced Wellness, teaching the importance of eating a nutritious meal and yoga and mindfulness/meditation. Deborah Dunn has been a practitioner and teacher of yoga/meditation for over 3 decades.  She is also, a certified holistic health counselor and substance abuse recovery coach. She is grateful daily to work with people to have health, wellness, peace and ease in their life;
  • Theatre Exercises, Games and Vocal Exercises;
  • Play Reading: Students will be given an anthology of the Best Plays From The Strawberry One-Act Festival, and discuss the plays as well as work on a scene from a play to perform in class;
  • Playwriting Workshop:  Students will write their own short plays to be read and developed in the class. The workshop will be taught by Van Dirk Fisher, founder and artistic director of the Riant Theatre and producer of the Strawberry One-Act Festival;
  • Acting Workshop:  Students will be coached by a teacher to give them feedback and guidance on the scenes they are working on in class;
  • Directors will be assigned to direct the plays chosen for our Performance Showcase at the end of the workshop in September at the Church of the Holy Apostle at 296 Ninth Avenue at 28th St.  The plays will also be showcased during the Strawberry One-Act Festival on September 29th at Theatre 54 @ Shetler Studios & Theatres, 244 West 54th Street, 12th Fl, NYC;
  • Journal Writing:  each student will be given a journal to write about their experience in the workshop during the last 15 minutes at the end of the day;
  • 2 Performance Showcases in September: (1) at the Church of the Holy Apostle and (1) during the Strawberry One-Act Festival on September 29th; and
  • Internships: Participants will also be able to apply for an internship with the Strawberry One-Act Festival (September 11th through September 29, 2019) and the Riant Theatre. A Youth Empowerment Scholarship Award(s) will be given to the most outstanding intern(s) that is enrolled in college or planning to enroll.

OUR INSTRUCTORS:

The Playwriting Workshop and Play Reading Workshop will be taught by Van Dirk Fisher, founder and artistic director of the Riant Theatre and producer of the Strawberry One-Act Festival, presenting over 1,500 one-act plays since 1995. Mr. Fisher has written several plays and musicals including: CODE OF SILENCE (Theatre at St. Clements), DREAM BABIES, A musical about teens living in Foster Care (Theatre at St. Clements), SWEET BLESSINGS, ROCK-A MY SOUL, A Rock Musical about the Susan Smith Story (Riant Theatre & Rose Nagelberg Theatre at Baruch Performing Arts Center) and the acclaimed one-man play, BED 26 co-written with Edafe Okporo, about a Nigerian seeking asylum in the U.S. (Strawberry Theatre Festival March 2019).
 
 
Van Dirk Fisher
 
The Acting Workshop taught by Elizabeth Van Dyke, an award winning Director and Actress. Her directorial credits include: THE BALLAD OF EMMIT TILL (Giogee Award for Best Director), GREAT MEN OF GOSPEL: Spirit Into Sound (AUDELCO Award Nomination for Best Director) and SOPHISTICATED LADIES (Onyx Award for Best Director & Best Production of the Year), THE PIANO LESSON and FOR COLORED GIRLS... to name a few.
 
Elizabeth has received an AUDELCO Award for Best Actress for her portrayal of Zora Neale Hurston and the Ace & Gold Award for LOVE TO ALL, LORRAINE a solo piece based on the life of Lorraine Hansberry that she wrote and co-directed. In addition, Elizabeth originated the roles of Fannie Mae Dove in FLYIN' WEST by Pearl Cleage and Annie Talbot in A DANCE ON WIDOW'S ROW by Samm Art Williams.
