THE RIANT THEATRE MANAGEMENT PROGRAM

INTERNSHIPS

WHO: High School, undergraduate and graduate students; recent graduates; early-career professionals, adults and seniors..

WHEN: FULL theatre season (September - June) or Seasonal: FALL (September-December), WINTER (January - March), SUMMER (June - August).

WHAT: A part-time theatre internship (25 hrs per week, Mon-Fri or Wed-Sun, 1pm - 6pm or 6pm - 11pm) in a professional and educational environment. Intensive training and work in one department. Attendance at departmental and full-staff meetings. Individual projects under the guidance of experienced supervisors. Invitations to special events and Riant Theatre performances. Free/discounted tickets to selected other theatre performances. Housing assistance is not available.

ARTISTIC Interns (FULL, FALL, SPRING, SUMMER) staff the office of the Artistic Director, assisting with artistic relations and providing administrative support. The Artistic Intern serves as a liaison between The Riant Theatre’s Artistic Director and the rest of the theatre community. Interns also attend Artistic staff meetings and assist at Opening Night parties. Telephone, organizational and writing skills are a must. Attention to detail is essential. Working knowledge of Windows, Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Outlook is preferred.

BUSINESS Interns (FULL, FALL, SPRING, SUMMER) participate in the theatre’s day-to-day fiscal operation and personnel management. Specific tasks include the processing of accounts payable, box office statements, subscription and single-ticket income, bank and petty-cash reconciliations.

CASTING Interns (FULL, FALL, SPRING, SUMMER) assist in the casting process for The Riant Theatre productions, special events, and in-house readings. Duties include heavy phone work with agents and managers, assisting at auditions, reading scripts, responding to submissions, and viewing productions throughout the New York City area. Working knowledge of Adobe PDF, Windows and Microsoft Word is preferred.

DEVELOPMENT/FUNDRAISING & SPECIAL EVENTS Interns (FULL, FALL, SPRING, SUMMER) assist the Development Office in the areas of Individual Giving, Institutional Giving, and Special Events. Internships in Development offer a unique opportunity to learn about fundraising in a team-oriented environment.

Individual Giving interns provide support for the theater’s patron and friends program. Duties include answering the patron hotline; booking house seats for Riant Theatre productions; assisting with patron events and correspondence; and helping with marketing and promotion of theater trips.

Institutional Giving interns research corporate and foundation prospects; work with artistic, literary, and business departments to gather information for proposals and reports; help to plan cultivation events for funders to learn more about the theater’s programs; and participate in the fundraising efforts associated with the theater’s Winter Benefit, The Youth Empowerment Awards Dinner, The Spring Fling Party, Summer Gala and the Masquerade Ball.

Special Events interns assist with the planning and administration of opening night parties, patron dinners, theatre fundraisers, Board meetings, the Winter Benefit and the Summer Gala. Development interns interface with all Riant Theatre departments, and interact with donors and board members at cultural events and productions. EDUCATION Interns (FULL, FALL, SPRING, SUMMER) work with Education staff in administering classroom residencies, student matinees, professional development workshops, and family workshops. Specific responsibilities include coordinating teacher workshops, contributing to department newsletter, and assisting with database management. In addition, interns will have opportunities to observe student workshops and presentations. Attention to detail and strong organizational skills a must.

LITERARY Interns (FULL, FALL, SPRING, SUMMER)- The Literary Department reviews over 800 scripts annually to program our Play Reading Series. Interns are involved with all aspects of departmental activities, including script evaluation, season programming and production coverage. Duties include clerical support, database upkeep, and attendance at in-house and out-of house readings. Knowledge of Windows and Microsoft Word strongly recommended.

MARKETING/PUBLIC RELATIONS Interns (FULL, FALL, SPRING, SUMMER) are directly involved with all marketing for The Riant Theatre’s season and special events. Interns will work on the subscription campaign, advertising, direct mail, audience surveys, subscriber correspondence, department files and archives. Interns also assist with copywriting and layouts for playbills, newsletters and website. Knowledge of Windows, MS Office Suite, PageMaker, Quark, Photoshop and/or FrontPage are preferred but not required.

PRODUCTION MANAGEMENT Interns (FULL, FALL, SPRING, SUMMER) will assist in the Production Management office, which handles budgeting, scheduling, and coordinating the technical aspects of all Riant Theatre productions, including benefits, special events, and workshops. Interns will also assist in providing administrative support to technical departments at The Riant Theatre.

FESTIVALS (Full Season, Fall or Spring) THE STRAWBERRY ONE-ACT FESTIVAL (WINTER & SUMMER), JOCUNDA MUSIC, FILM & THEATRE FESTIVAL (Full Year, but you can choose 3 months out of the year), LGBTQ Short Play Festival (FEBRUARY - JUNE), THE INTERNATIONAL LGBTQ THEATREFESTIVAL (JULY - SEPTEMBER). Interns are involved with all aspects of the production of the plays, including corresponding with the literary community, processing tickets, obtaining and selling books & t-shirts at performances, and hosting post-performance receptions.

COSTUME Intern ( Fall , Spring or Summer) will assist The Riant Theatre’s wardrobe supervisor in all aspects. This position will involve construction and shopping as well the prep and maintenance of each show. This position will afford the opportunity to work with top designers and technicians on a wide variety of show types.

PROPERTIES Intern (Fall, Spring or Summer) will assist in the production of new shows and in the running and maintenance of the prop shop. Must be enthusiastic and responsible, with willingness to learn. Basic carpentry, soft goods, paint experience helpful- good attitude a must. Intern will have opportunity to attend production meetings, work with top designers and directors, and be an integral part of properties team.

TECHNICAL DIRECTION Intern(Fall, Spring or Summer) will work closely with our Technical Director and carpentry staff. The intern will assist with the construction, load-in and strike of shows as well as help with the Riant Theatre’s fund raising events. This position will afford the opportunity to work very closely with the TD and ATD helping with show prep, purchasing and drafting as well as helping to solve many technical issues. A basic knowledge of carpentry and tool use is helpful though training will be provided.

PRODUCTION ASSISTANTS (PAs) are assigned on a show-by-show basis, working directly with stage managers of Riant Theatre productions during pre-production, rehearsal, tech, and performance and last approximately 2 - 4 months depending on the show.. PAs assist in all areas of stage management, including scheduling, rehearsal set-up, taking blocking notes, and prompting and running shows. Stage management experience is preferred.
